Beware: Plumber Scam

Plumbing mishaps never choose any convenient time to happen, they just happen. When dilemmas arise and you are left with whoever plumber is available around, you should make sure you will be hiring a real expert and not some scam plumbers. Scammers can be very convincing especially when they know what to talk about. However, the results of their work would make you regret hiring them. They have no idea what they are doing but would just do the job for the money; you will actually fall into their lies when they start talking about how affordable their service will be. They might cost less but they are just going to worsen the problem they’re supposed to fix in the first place.

Usually, you’ll know when a plumber is not legit when they are too eager to work on the job ASAP, even before any contracts are sign—they won’t even have a contract to present to you. They would also demand for cash-only payment or will even agree to be paid “under the table”. Services they offer will be surprisingly be too affordable or too pricey for they have no fixed pricing on their services. With this, you better self-research and find out the cost range of plumbing services in your area. When it comes to down payments, they would sometimes ask for more than 25% of the price. Moreover, they wouldn’t be justifying the materials they will be using for the project (for example, they wouldn’t have a concrete explanation why they choose copper or brass instead of PVC).

Scammers are everywhere. They will take advantage of your lack in knowledge in home maintenance and use this to feed you with false information that would sound really convincing. You’d really buy their sales talk. Nowadays, you must really be fully-aware of products and services you are paying for.

To keep yourself secured, try asking the following questions to your hired plumbers and take note if they sound sketchy or if their answers would be consistent:

  • “Would I be paying you at an hourly rate or do you have a fixed service price?”

  • “Will you be doing this on your own or would you have a team with you?”

  • “How long does this usually take to finish?”

  • “Are you licensed by the Victorian Building Authority?”

“What’s your specialty?” (Know that simple toilet overflow wouldn’t require a long-term commercial plumber and a huge plumbing remodeling shouldn’t be done by a plumber who only knows repairs)
