How to Protect your Water System from the Rain

Rainfall in Sydney is fairly abundant and there is no dry season in the area. Having this kind of weather, your household must be well-prepared for the rainy seasons as to prevent water damage. Your plumbing system must be well-maintained enough to withstand no matter what weather there is in the area. Keeping your home protected from the rain is much like keeping a jacket and an umbrella with you when you are going outside and you know it’s about to rain. Here are some tips in protecting your household during the rainy season:

  • Have a sump pump installed in your home, or if you already have one, make sure it is properly working. A sump pump is responsible for keeping the area under a building dry as it is used to remove water gathered in a water-collecting sump basin. It is usually installed in the basement or in a building’s crawlspace. Have a sump pump installed and guarantee yourself a flood-free basement.

  • Make every member of your household know where and how to shut off your water main. When circumstances arise, such as flooding or pipes breaking because of heavy rains, turning off your water main switch prevents flooding and further water damage. Usually, these switches are located in the basement. We suggest you find yours even before the rainy season arrives.

  • Maintain the good condition of your plumbing system. Your plumbing system will be responsible for all the things said above. Be aware of your pipes’ condition; be aware of the leaks or potential cracks that can cause bigger problems; and make sure you know how to do simple repairs so you don’t have to call your trusty plumbers in the middle of a bad weather. Keep your plumbing system in a good condition for you to just sit back and relax with a cup of hot coco while you enjoy the sound of the rain.

Bad weather is inevitable. We can’t control the weather but what we can control is the damage that can be caused by the bad weather. Make sure your plumbing system is good enough to withstand whatever weather will come. Protect your home like you protect yourself.
