Signs the Water Main is Broken and Needs Replacement

Your water main is the most important part of your plumbing system as it is responsible of the water coming in and out of your home. Even the smallest cracks and simplest leaks can already be a huge burden to your water system. Broken water lines are usually inevitable. A lot of factors can be the cause of your water main getting broken, mainly time, weather, and frequency of usage. Sometimes, homeowners tend to overlook small problems, such as leaks and cracks, and only solving them with a quick cover of duct tape. This is just prolonging the problem at hand and turning it into a bigger problem in the future. As a homeowner, you must be responsible enough to be aware about your water main’s condition, knowing when to fix them, or better yet, replace them.

There are several signs that will tell you your water main is in need of a plumber check-up:

  • UNUSUAL CLOGGING - If your water outlets (sinks, toilets, bathtubs, etc.) are all unusually clogging, there might be huge clog in your main line. You can check it for yourself and apply DIY solutions that can easily unclog pipes, especially when the clogging is only caused by buildup of grease or food.

  • PUTTING SOLID OBJECTS DOWN THE DRAIN - If you and your household members are sure you all aren’t putting anything in your drain and there is only a little possibility of the clog being caused by buildup of food or grease, then you better check your pipeline’s position with the trees. It is said that trees constantly seeks moisture with their roots and settles anywhere they find that moisture; roots will try to get in and grow even in the smallest cracks and when these roots grow in your pipes, a bursting might occur, causing a bigger plumbing mishap for your household.

  • CHANGE IN WATER PRESSURE - A change in water pressure can also be a water main problem. When your water pressure starts dropping, better have it checked already and get it replaced!

  • CHANGE IN WATER CONSISTENCY - The water itself can help you detect a water main problem; if you notice signs of discoloration, strange smells, or starts having a grainy texture when you drink it, your water could be contaminated. Breaks and leaks in your main water line allows dirt or any foreign stuff to get into your water, much worse in your drinking water.

  • LAWN SEEMS GREENER - Ever notice a greener part of your lawn? Maybe this part is getting water somewhere else that isn’t from you watering? Water pooling in your yard or having small parts of your lawn that are greener than the rest is a clear sign of leakage from the main line.

  • NOISY PIPES - Do you wake up at night with your pipes groaning like they’re alive? This may be a sign of a broke, leaking main water line. Get your plumber to look at it in the morning to be sure.

  • HIGH WATER BILL - A sudden spike in you water bill, even when your family use less water, may be a sign of a leaking main water line. It’s better to spend money on plumbing now than to spend a bigger amount of money on water bill every month.

As said, cracks and leaks are usually inevitable because of the conditions the pipes have to endure every day. However, you can prevent bigger problems to occur by being more aware of your water main’s condition. Not only will this prevent you from pipe bursting that causes flooding but can also save your family from water contamination.
